Volcanoes start where magma forms, deep inside the Earth–these roots matter!

This website is a part of a project for the Volcanology class at Michigan Technological University. The purpose is to present Big Ideas in Volcanology.

In fact in volcanology, there are several areas of specialization to study our Earth and volcanoes. While some researchers study lava and magma composition, others are concentrated on the seismic activity, plate motion… Unfortunately all studies do not agreed and some results in one study in one specialty can disapprove results in another specialty.

Despite this diversity of studies, volcanoes are still mysterious and understanding them is a real challenge. For that, all answers we can find are based on Big Ideas. They are described here with some main subject.

1   •Volcanic heat comes from natural radioactivity.
2   •Volcanism happens on many planets.
3   •Volcanoes start where magma forms, deep inside earth–these roots matter.
4   •Eruptions are started by diverse events (triggers).
5   •Magma moves in fits and starts.
6   •Growth and movement of bubbles drives eruptions.
7   •Understanding of Granular flow is a key hurdle for volcanology.
8   •Earth’s atmosphere and oceans come from volcanic degassing.
9   •Most volcanoes should be expected to fail catastrophically.
10 •Volcanoes erupt in a time series pattern that tends to recur.
11 •Super-eruptions are a threat to living things on earth.
12 •Eruptions cannot be engineered successfully, even though volcanoes pose risk to humans.
